Acupuncture
In
addition to conventional medicine I also practice acupuncture,
this is the western scientific style. Acupuncture is of course
a traditional and ancient technique, there is evidence of
its use 7000 years ago.
Although it has not been possible to confirm
the precise mechanism of action we now have some working theories
as to the mechanism by which this technique is effective.
In essence it is thought to "fool or distract" the
nervous system and so offer relief from many types of pain.
Everyone learns to rub a site of injury to
make it better, this is thought to be a modulation of the
nervous system of the type invoked by acupuncture. Western
scientific acupuncture follows orthodox clinical diagnosis
and needling points chosen on neurophysiological principals.
I find it a very useful technique which can
be used in some cases as the sole treatment or safely in conjunction
with conventional drug therapy.
