Possible outbreak of Parvo Virus in Maidstone 2003 saw an outbreak of Parvo Virus in Maidstone which sadly killed a number of dogs. Whilst the outbreak seems to have quietened down owners should not become complacent about routine vaccinations. This is a very nasty disease which is invariably fatal. Any dog which has not been vaccinated within the last 12 months should seek veterinary advice. Many people think that vaccinated puppies do not need boosters or that old dogs have a permanent immunity. This is not the case and as the population of unvaccinated pets increases so these diseases are more likely to be seen and spread. The frequency at which different vaccines should be boosted varies with the disease and according to the vaccine manufacturer. All dogs are also at risk of Leptospirosis unless regularly vaccinated, this is spread in infected urine from both other dogs but also rodents and can be transmitted to people and is often fatal. If you or your children let the dog lick you and you do not wash after then you are at risk. If you have let your dogs vaccinations lapse why not take advantage of our vaccination amnesty that is running for the next few months and get your dog the full protection they deserve. See our vaccination amnesty page for full details - click here. Just contact the surgery on 01622 752154 if you want any advice or information on what you need to do. |
