PETS Passports
PETS passports can be issued for dogs, cats and ferrets. To complete a PETS passport the animal must fulfill certain criteria. For dogs and cats the animal must be microchipped, all regular vaccines must be updated and have a rabies vaccination. The efficacy of the rabies vaccine has to be chacked after 4-6 weeks using a blood test. At present the animal cannot re-enter the UK until 6 months after the blood test, thereafter it can travel as often as required provided the passport is kept up to date, which means rabies vaccinations every three years. (DO NOT LAPSE BY EVEN ONE DAY OR THE BLOOD TEST MUST BE REPEATED.) PETS Passports are accepted throughout the EU and also many other countries such as Canada, Antigua, Iceland and the Vatican to mention just a few. PETS Passports and export certificates can only be completed by an LVI (local veterinary inspector for DEFRA) so if you would like to get a passport please make sure your appointment is with Sally who is the LVI at College Veterinary Surgery. You can also phone the PETS helpline 0870 2411710 or visit the DEFRA website at www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/PETS/index.htm
