Seasonal health care How to help your pet cope with Fireworks and other loud noises Clients often require advice or treatment for their animals who are alarmed by fireworks and other loud noises. Symptoms can include panting, pacing, salivation, barking, trembling and hiding. Even minor worries that animals have should be tackled as if left untreated these can progress to serious phobias causing distress to both animal and owner. Often in the past, these phobias have been treated with mild sedatives. However these only mask the symptoms and do not relieve the fear at all. Further, in many areas the firework season now extends from November through the New Year and no one wants to sedate an animal for months. In some cases pheromone therapy can help in the treatment of stress and phobias. These pheromones are available for both dogs, DAP ( Dog Appeasing Pheromone) and cats, Feliway, and can reduce stress in these animals. For fireworks therapy DAP should be started at least 14 days before anticipated fireworks. This therapy works very much better with a training CD which we can supply to desensitize dogs who are sensitive to fireworks, traffic noise or thunderstorms. Please call the surgery on 01622 752154 to discuss the use of DAP and other advice on minimising your pets stress over the winter. DAP and Feliway can also be used to help establish a puppy/kitten in a new home, coping with strangers and can help with vocalisation soiling and over grooming.
